We realize that gift-giving is harder this year, but here is a simple way to give a gift that keeps giving. It´s easy to lose perspective on how much money $10 amounts to in northern Uganda - but in a place where people have few economic opportunities, selling shea nut and shea butter can greatly enhance a family´s ability to feed itself and send children to school.
Having just returned from visiting the Shea Project and NUSPA, I am hopeful for change and new opportunities as peace returns to northern Uganda after 20 years of war. NUSPA membership is as strong as ever and COVOL is currently working with over 2,000 NUSPA producers - mostly women! Income earned from selling shea products helps women expand their gardens by providing cash to purchase tools, seeds and cows for plowing, as well as other life sustaining small animals like chickens and goats. I saw impressive rice, groundnut and sesame harvests while visiting farmers and an abundance of new home construction and a return of livestock to the area. These benefits can help uplift entire communities.

Finally, NUSPA Fair Trade Shea Butter Gets Organic Certification!
Over 2,000 women of the Northern Uganda Shea Processors Association (NUSPA) have
just finished the rigorous organic certification process. With the new
certification, NUSPA shea butter products will be able to compete
globally in the natural products market.
NUSPA received certification in the fall of 2006, after a long training
process with The Shea Project, and then a long inspection exercise with Ugo
Cert on behalf of CERES and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.
CERES is one of the worldıs most respected organic certification bodies
based in Germany.
